Fit experience with Jerry Gerlich

Happy New Year Jerry.

I hope you had a great Christmas season. I took three weeks off the bike in December to lay down new floors in the house. I have never been happier to get back in the workshop and fit room after that grunt work was over! I have been back to riding and continuing to focus on the items from the fit report.

  • Daily stretching sessions
  • The functional training exercises that you prescribed
  • Leading with left leg on and off bike
  • Conscious effort to rotate my right ilium back while pedaling in the saddle
  • Split stance when standing with right foot slightly forward
  • Heavy focus on seated, standing and overall posture when off the bike
  • Focusing on activating posterior chain on the bike. I am no longer experiencing localized loading of quads. I am surprised at how weak my hamstrings had become over time.
  • Training myself to reduce hand weight to minimum. Left and right are now close to equal. Functional exercises to correct internal rotation have made a marked difference as has Steve’s $4 stretch.

The corrections that you made to my position may have appeared minimal but the impact has been tremendous. The changes that you made to my cleats has proven to be impactful in two ways: significant correction to my stability on the bike and equally important, set me on the right path of foot correction with my clients. Admittedly, I had gotten lost in the weeds on that one. Too systematic and too formulaic in my approach. Thank you very much for the guidance and sharing some of your hard won experience.

All of this has been very useful in the fit room over the the last few months. Is there a priority that I should read the following books?

G’day Steve,

Thank you for providing a tremendous resource to fitters and individuals around the world with this website. Likely, the cheapest tuition on the planet. You and Jerry have corrected the course of my fitting work, making me look deeper at human functionality and away from a rudimentary bio-mechanical process. You helped me realize I wasn’t crazy by what I was seeing with every consensus process failing to address or solve most issues. You guys have me thinking harder, trusting my eyes and ears. Going deeper and researching has become a commitment. A fitter should be constantly training. Thank you again for sharing your years of work and research, challenging us to work to a higher standard.

P.S. Many thanks to Colby and his very informative podcast. His podcast is a wealth of knowledge, experience and food for thought.

Sincerely,

Brian McGuigan

  1. Thanks Brian. Fun fitting with another fitter. You’re right about Colby Pearce’s podcasts. Between Steve’s posts and Colby’s recordings, you can find truly useful information.
